Bird Watch: Hummingbird update

Empty nest: I checked the hummingbird nest on Wednesday, Feburary 25, 2009, around 6 p.m. It's been empty for a few days but I confirmed it on Feb. 25. The exterior of the nest was lined with lichen as shown below. Also, note the seamless integration of the nest with the fork between the branches.

What does that mean? Not inhabited this year, something happened to the birds, or the babies already fledged? It's early days for nesting around here, but I don't know the Berkeley timeline. What a beautiful nest, and I hope everyone's okay!

Looks like the mother and chicks flew the nest; well, the chicks must have fledged.

See http://localecologist.blogspot.com/2009/02/bird-watch-nesting-adult-hummingbird.html for photo of mother in nest sitting on chicks, post incubation (I never managed to photograph the chicks).
