Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin in Washington DC

As soon as spring seemed to be coming, neighbors began urging us to make the time to see the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin. This activity had been on my personal DC to-do list, but it became a must-do with all the glowing reports from long-time residents. Last week I heard that the blossoms would peak on Friday, March 25th. We couldn't get into the city so hoped that the weather would cooperate for a Saturday visit. It did. Saturday brought blue sky, sunshine, and cool temperatures in the shade. We arrived at the basin at 9 am and it was already bustling with people.

The more than 1400 cherries lining the basin are of the Yoshino variety. I am considering a visit to see the peak bloom of the Kwanzan and other cherry varieties on the Hains Point Loop Trail.

The cherries frame the monuments spectacularly, don't you think?

It does my heart good to know that this is something that people still enjoy.
