The first and the last example are Gates with a capital "G".

Les, indeed. The first gate has a twin on the opposite sidewalk; "entrances" to a 1906 Berkeley subdivision, Claremont Court (see http://www.berkeleyheritage.com/berkeley_landmarks/2005_landmarks.html).

Gotta love a town that is all about variety and originality! The Magnus Museum is one of the hidden gems of the Bay Area. I discovered it by accident while visiting the site of my great-aunt's former home in the Claremont neighborhood. What a beautiful part of town. Thanks for the nifty tour!
